What should I do if I drop a contact lens on the floor? What you should and shouldn't do.
Can you reuse a contact lens that has fallen out?
The quick answer: you shouldn't .
A contact lens that has touched the ground is no longer safe for your eyes, even if it “looks clean.”
The surface may have germs, dust, fibers, or even invisible debris that could cause an eye infection.
Your eyes are sensitive. And putting in a contaminated contact lens can cause:
-
Immediate irritation
-
Infections such as conjunctivitis or keratitis
-
Discomfort all day long
What if I rinse it with contact lens solution?
Although the idea sounds logical, it is not enough .
Contact lens solutions are not intended to sterilize a dirty lens from the ground , but rather to preserve and rinse an already clean lens.
Do not use tap water or saline solution . Neither is safe for cleaning contact lenses.
What do I do then?
It depends on the type of contact lens you use:
-
If it's a daily lens (like OpticVue HydroPlus Daily) → Throw it away and use a new one.
-
If it is a monthly (like HydroPlus Monthly or HighOxygen) → It is also recommended to throw it away for safety.
A damaged or contaminated contact lens can cost you dearly in the long run.
What if I don't have another one on hand?
It's better to wear glasses for a few hours than to risk getting an infection.
If you only wear one contact lens, it's not worth the risk of putting in the other dirty one.
How to prevent it from happening again?
-
Always have a spare contact lens on hand (at home, in your purse, in your makeup bag).
-
Handle them on a clean surface , preferably a towel or napkin.
-
Don't rush. Contact lenses and rushing don't mix.
🟦 OpticVue Tip:
If you wear daily contact lenses, it's best to always have an extra pair in case something like this happens.
That's why our boxes come with 30 units per eye and you can easily find them in pharmacies or on our website .
